A December campaign to the Golden Triangle

Hardship and Frustrations

A group comprising students and lecturers faced many hardships and frustrations on their way to Kyengtung in “The golden Triangle” (An area linking China, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar with a reputation for opium growing). They finally made their way through after thirteen days of travel which they had expected to take only seven. Tears and sweat, fears and anxiety prolonged their tough journey as they travelled on a bus full of goods- rotten dried fish inside and bad smelling baskets of chickens above. Besides, the greedy driver boarded 48 passengers whereas the bus was designed for 16. The situation was aggravated by the malfunctioning of the engine which often needed repair, the driver who took time for rest and medication every now and then and the bad road which had been damaged everywhere by the heavy monsoon rain.

They slept many nights in small villages and one night in the jungle where there was neither fire nor food to buy. But thank God, none of them fell sick on such a dragged out, long, hard journey in such chilly winter weather.

We can imagine how they felt, the joy of success after deadly war, when they first saw the vast wide spread valley of Kyengtung. As they felt the breeze that comes from the long lovely meadows their tears turned into laughter, fears into fun, frustration into fresh enthusiasm, and anxiety into energy.

It was also a great joy for the church leaders who were waiting for them with great anxiety. These leaders had drawn up an itinerary for them, visits to 26 local churches and had sent messages ahead of time. Unfortunately, due to the lost time the group visited only 24.

Bringing in the Sheaves

After all the trials the mission could be summed up as successful. Every church said these same words “Please come again. Next time we will be more ready to host and support much, much more than this.” The group raised $US 1300 for the school funds. But the greater benefit was the imparting of teaching in those 24 churches and the spreading of the gospel throughout that region known as “The Golden Triangle”.
